The fabulous 12-cylinder 917 was the key to Porsche’s first overall victory at Le Mans in 1970. It went on to dominate the World Championship for Makes and later, triumphed again, this time in 1973 in the Can-Am series with up to 1,000 bhp. The Porsche 917 is probably the most famous racing car in history and is surrounded by various myths and legends.
Helmut Deimel has now created a cinematic monument to this remarkable sports car from Zuffenhausen. In 82 minutes of screen time, he tells the whole story of the car, from its development and presentation 1969 right through its years racing in the World Championship, its leading role in the Le Mans film, plus its exploits in Can-Am and in Europe at the Interserie. All these led eventually to Mark Donohue’s record-breaking drive at Talladega Speedway in 1975 where he recorded a lap at 221.61 mph.
